What furniture do you need to consider when furnishing your new master bedroom? Whether you’ve just moved into a new home or you’re splashing out on a completely new look, deciding what bedroom furniture you really need can be daunting.

The bedroom – where we spend a third of our lives – is the sanctuary of our homes. It’s where we go to rest, relax, sleep, and also unwind with our partners. A well-designed master bedroom brightens our mood, aids the sleeping process, and provides the functionality we need and crave. That’s why it’s so important to get the right bedroom furniture in place.

So what furniture do you need for a new bedroom?

1. Bed

The bed is the centerpiece of a bedroom and the most important item of bedroom furniture to get right, in terms of both style and comfort. It’s the furniture piece that will support you for potentially decades to come.

Beds come in a variety of styles, materials, sizes, upholsteries, and storage options. It’s important to be sure of the bedroom’s overall style, accompanying furnishings, and size requirements before selecting your new bed.

2. Nightstand

The nightstand – or bedside table – should complement your bed and create a visual balance. Nightstands are both aesthetic and functional items of furniture, providing close-to-hand storage options and surfaces on which to place lamps, cups and books.

While they don’t need to exactly match the style of your bed, if you’re looking to develop a seamless master bedroom décor scheme, then does help that they do.

3. Dresser

The typical bedroom dresser acts as a storage piece for items like clothing, lingerie, linens, and various other bits and pieces. They usually come with a matching mirror for daily grooming rituals. As such they provide a focal point as well as a storage piece.

Dressers come in a variety of sizes and materials. The one you choose will depend on the bed style and overall décor scheme and size of the bedroom.

4. Chest of Drawers

A chest of drawers is similar to a dresser but is taller and usually takes up less floor space. It’s ideal to have both types of furniture in your bedroom but if space is really an issue then a chest of drawers can be an alternative to a dresser.

Chest of drawers also provide a nice surface area for the placement of lamps, photos, and mirrors. They come in a wide range of styles, shapes and sizes to suit different needs and looks.

5. Wardrobe (Armoire)

It can be said the wardrobe, or armoire, is the second most important bedroom furniture piece to choose after the bed. The wardrobe will be the largest storage item in the room and as such will have both aesthetic and functional elements to consider.

Wardrobes come in a large variety of different designers, with mirrors, drawers and even alcoves. Given its size and important, it’s vital the bedroom wardrobe is complemented with surrounding matching furniture and contributes positively to the overall décor scheme.

6. Jewelry Armoire

When a jewelry box simply won’t do, then a jewelry armoire is the answer. An armoire is the name given to tall chests with potentially lots of doors, shelves and drawers for the storage of smaller items. They make ideal jewelry storage furniture.

Jewelry armoires also come in a variety of styles, materials and features. Some have doors that can open up and showcase your favourite necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The size of the furniture piece and the number of compartments will depend on your bedroom size and storage needs.

7. Bedroom Bench

It’s easy to forget bedroom benches but they provide multifunctional elements to a master bedroom, as well as being a decorative accent piece. Benches can be placed at the end of a bed, against a wall, or be used in a variety of places from one day to the next.

Some benches have inner-storage options including shelves and box compartments. Other come on wheels for easy manoeuvring. Bedroom benches can be found in a huge variety of styles, sizes, upholstery options and materials.

Before you buy bedroom furniture

Before you buy furniture for your bedroom it’s important to consider what the overall style you want to achieve for the room. Often it’s easier to buy a bedroom set that will provide a complete and seamless look without needing to search for matching furniture items separately.

Also think about the size and dimensions of the room. Some furniture styles will suit smaller rooms, others – such a heavy traditional wooden styles – can only really work in large and spacious interiors.

Other points to consider are whether you need a lot of storage options included with the furniture, the colours of the materials, how they match with the flooring and the walls, and also the type of decorative accessories you’ll be wanting to include.
